For 2008, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's most iconic inductee was Madonna, whose career has evolved far beyond the clubs where her earliest dance pop tracks first gained traction. The trashy-but-sweet dance floor urchin that writhed through her earliest music videos morphed into the faux bride of "Like a Virgin" and the faux Marilyn Monroe of "Material Girl," then to presiding MTV poster girl and, finally, the "Queen of Pop." Along the way, she's dabbled in rock and techno, defined "vogue-ing" and set tongues wagging with her coffee table "Sex" tome, all without missing a beat (or a photo op). In the new millennium she's authored children's book and just unveiled her debut as a film director, but music remains ground zero for her pop cultural empire.
